Legacy of Union Station. Opened Oct. 27, 1907, Union Station is a magnificent example of the Beaux-Arts style architecture. Designed as a gateway for the capital city, the monumental building covered more ground than any building in the country and was the largest train station in the world. A catalyst to Washington's monumental transformation, Union Station brought grandeur to DC, with 77 pounds of 22k gold leaf adorning the 96-foot barrel-vaulted ceilings. The white granite and classic lines of Union Station set the arena for Washington's architecture, reflected in the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials and Supreme Court. Over the years, presidents and dignitaries were officially welcomed here, including King George VI and Queen Elizabeth of Great Britain. Through two world wars, the Station served as a major center of transportation and venue for many historic events. On April 14, 1945, the casket of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt backed into Union Station. Enacted by Congress, Union Station Redevelopment Act of 1981 restored the building to its original state and created a mixed-use transportation and retail complex. [Top]
